After watching the X-men movies, I was intrigued by the mutant, Mystique.
Not just because she looks good... in blue, she's a shapeshifter and
guess what she makes me think of?
Cuttlefishes and Octopuses!
If you think that make me a weirdo, watch the YouTube clip below for a brief introduction to Cuttlefish and Octopus shape shifting
You should learn more about Cuttlefish and Octopus camouflage / shape shifting ability if it is new to you. It has to be one of the most extraordinary talent on Earth.
As incredible as it may sound, I may have something even more intriguing to show you.
Cuttlefishes and Octopuses brought camouflage to the shapeshifting level.
There's somebody I want you to meet. It brings Octopus shape shifting to the 'X-men' level.
In the video, you saw the Mimic Octopus impersonating flatfish, sea snake, lionfish and what looks like a 'furry turkey with human legs'.
This could be the only animal in our world that impersonates a variety of animals. They don't just copy the look, they copy the behavior!
Other animals imitated includes; jellyfish, mantis shrimp, brittle stars, seashells, anemones, stingrays, certain crabs and many more.
What's more... Yes! There is MORE. It knows who's the enemy of its enemies!
For example, when attacked by damselfishes, it mimics the banded sea snake, a known predator of damselfishes, and sends the fooled fish fleeing.
Because of its behavior, this Octopus is named 'Mimic Octopus'. Had it been a cat, we would expect... 'Copy Cat'.
For a creature so wonderful, it deserves to be named 'X-Octopus' or something cool and expressive like those X-men monikers.
Mystique is perfect. Too bad it is taken.
