I have to confess we are really 'white metal jewelry' people. White gold, rhodium and silver are what we cannot do without.

Where we come from, gold jewelry is usually the 22k variety. They are simply too yellowish for our liking.

Designing jewelry brings out the adventurers in us and we have dabbled in many kinds of materials including a variety of gold.

When we started crafting 14k gold jewelry, feelings toward this precious metal began to change. Its allure increased and deepened. 14k gold jewellery has become irresistible.

This gold grew on us. Gold is truly a magnificent colour. In 14k gold, we see the gold, in all its richness and glory but not the yellow.

The yellow tinge in other varieties of gold is too strong as a main colour in a jewelry piece. The yellowness is also too warm a colour to complement a number of stones and materials.

The hue in 14k gold jewellery is surprisingly neutral as a colour, enabling it to be paired and coordinated with most other colours and jewelry components. This is a huge factor for us as it also imply that 14k gold jewelry will match most clothing and styles.
 

The Search Began

14k gold is gold. It is solid gold. And gold is gold.

What the heck am I rambling about?

It is expensive!

We went about looking for ways to make 14k gold jewelery more affordable and tried out 14k gold plating. What we are happy about is that they look almost like 14k solid gold.

14k gold plating refers to a microscopic film of gold particles attached to a cheaper base metal. The thickness of gold plating is usually only one to a few microns.

Extensive testing revealed that 14k gold plating wears off easily. The thin layer of gold can wear off from polishing alone to expose the base metal beneath. Regular contact with sweat can do the same damage. 14k gold plating also has a tendency to chip, crack, flake and peel.

Plating quality varies widely and we managed to uncover a few decent sources that passed our quality policies.

All the time and effort working on 14k gold plating has come to nothing!

We are sad but glad as well. We have stumbled on something so much better, ditching the past work on gold plating is a no-brainer.

The Gold of the Future

The gold jewelry industry introduces its latest innovation. Gold filled is termed the 'gold of the future' as it presents the same qualities as solid gold at a fraction of the price.

Gold plating, as discussed, is extremely thin, electroplated onto a base metal.

Gold filled, on the other hand, is gold bonded with high heat, under great pressure onto a base metal. The thickness of gold is at least 100 times more than gold plating.

To be defined as gold filled, the amount of gold has to make up at least 5% of the whole piece of jewelry and they are all found on the surface.
